Soon after Israel in Egypt, Handel composed in only 17 days L’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato, a pastoral ode full of inventions. The temperament of the joyful hedonist opposes that of the meditative thinker. Handel concludes this work with the tempered arbitration of a moderate spirit.
