By 1801-1802 Beethoven composed Opus 31, a group of 3 sonatas, of which the first two were published in 1803. When he was questioned on the meaning of the second one, Beethoven answered: “Read the Tempest by Shakespeare!” He will have the same answer about the “Appassionata” Sonata.
