Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
(1756-1791)

Die Zauberflöte, Act I - Scene 2

Mozart, as well as Haydn, was a dynamic member of the Freemasonry Order and he has placed in this opera numerous revealing symbols. Papageno is the bird merchant. Happy-go-lucky, he is the link between human weakness that he incarnates and forces of which he does not know he is dependent. The first performance took place on September 30th, 1791, hardly 2 months before Mozart’s death.
